SNIP Coat of Arms of the Most Serene Republic of Marseille. Basically a city-state that decided to secede from the French Kindgom after the great plague of Marseille in the 1720s. Actually looks damn good ^_^ Though I must complain, the arms of Marseille is a white cross on a blue shield and the traditional supporters are a silver (sometimes gold) lion and ox www.ngw.nl/heraldrywiki/index.php?title=MarseilleA city-state that calls itself a secular democratic republic wouldn't want a symbol from the monarchy and the crusades on its emblem tho.

The vast majority of countries in Europe does just that. The same for cities. A coat of arms is a historical symbol of a city, something to be proud of and most cities were very proud of theirs. I don't for a minute believe that they'd just throw it away.

Soooo... I have an odd question!
I would really like to get a vector version of ye (supposedly) ole family crest. Turns out I'm really bad at that kind of graphical work. Does anyone know anyone worth their salt when it comes to creating nice coat of arms?

Finally made some time for a personal project, this is what I believe the greater arms of the Czech city of Ústí nad Labem would look like. The city has no historical crest, compartment or supporters, only a shield, the rest is made up. The original arms of the city had a white double-tailed lion rampant with a silver helm on its head bearing a crest of a rowing boat (no joke) on a green shield. Apparently the peeps weren't too happy with it so they devised a plan to change them. They "lost" their original grant of arms and had a "copy" made which contained some significant changes, changing the shield to red and the crest to golden wings. This they then submitting to the king for approval. The king ofc had no idea that they made the change and signed it. And ever since, those clever bastards have been using this new version. As to my own changes, I'd say the crest and supporters are pretty obvious. The flags are the flags of the city and the compartment is based on the fact that both Prague and the proposed greater arms of Brno used golden linden branches. I've threaded a blue ribbon through them as a symbol of the Elbe which flows through the city and is a part of its name. A second version employing the arms of the three districts which are a part of the greater Ústí nad Labem as well as the part of a fourth which was historically a part of the city but is today a separate municipality. Originally I used it with the same supporters as the other greater arms but I decided it looks too crowded so I merely decorated it with some scrollwork and a mural crown.

I do like some of the fantastic renderings of arms on this thread, especially the Irish Republic one by The Aven the OP. For my novel that I am writing, which is a AH comedy thriller, I have been coming up with a few designs for arms (and Latin mottos to go with them) such as one for the fictitious city where most of the story is set. What graphics programme or other method do TheAven and the other users who have created arms, use to create those splendid renditions? I've only been able to create rough pencil drawings of my arms ideas, so I would really appreciate some pointers to be able to create professional versions of them before I post them on the thread!

I'm not 100% sure what Aven and others use, but I'd guess they use Inkscape or GIMP. I'd personally recommend the former - Inkscape's free and uses vector graphics which makes certain things a lot easier. It might take some getting used to though - I'd recommend going through the tutorials in the Help menu if you do decide to give it a go.
