I just finished "Liberty 1784" by Conroy, about a British victory at Yorktown with the continental army having to flee to a safe refuge in Illinois. It was an awesome read and I passed it along to a fellow crusty staff sergeant in Fargo

A little while back, in the winter storm, I read Life, Animated by Ron Susskind. It's a well-written, personal story of his family and their autistic son, who learned to communicate with the help of Disney movies. (As a side note, what I've read of Ron Susskind is excellent. He wrote the worthwhile The Price of Loyalty, which both documented the Bush administration's pushing for Iraq prior to 9/11 (and not long after), but also told of a fascinating incident not long after 9/11 involving an impromptu hymn performance at Camp David, which, despite my political views, I wish I could have seen.

My kind of thread Currently reading Frogs in a Storm: Operation Barbarossa Backwards (Žáby v bouři: Operace Barbarossa naruby) by Jan Drnek. It's an alt. history where WWII is against the USSR. not all that far fetched of a scenario,if Stalin had thought he could pull it off
