So far my role has been to rain on people's parades across althistoria, so I may as well keept up the tradition!
I didn't like it that much! It was so-so, but I still think the only actually good MCU films were Iron Man, Captain America, and I guess Guardians of the Galaxy but it's so far overhyped that it's ridiculous.
Things I enjoyed!:
- Spiderman was depicted nicely, much more similar to Tobey Maguire's except further into the character's comic-based nerdiness.
- Zemo was a pretty great villain, it was nice to have something more intricate.
- The scenes between Vision and Scarlet Witch (minus when she's trying to crush him) were fun, particularly if you're aware of the comics.
- Chadwick Boseman did a good job of portraying T'Challa, since his interviews had me worried he didn't know more than what his character notes told him to say about the character.
- Jim Rash cameo! Russo Brothers love their Community callbacks :3
Things I disliked (non-exhaustive):
- The reasons for them fighting were idiotic. The only actual conflict is between Black Panther and Bucky. Only once the reveal happens at the end does the film's central conflict make sense.
- Why is Hawkeye here? Quicksilver is a stupid answer.
- No one dies, there's nothing at risk, the whole thing ends with virtually zero consequences. Even Cap at the end sends a phone and is like "so I know we totally tried to kill each other but I'm here if you need me bro".
- Speaking of! Letting Cap get in that letter at the end is a cheap and shitty way of trying to give Cap the last word and make him seem like the bigger man. He is clearly in the wrong both ideologically and emotionally throughout the film, and it's a lazy ending.
- Speaking of again! What a lazy ending to just bust everyone out of prison in the last few seconds.
- Plus why are Ant-Man, Falcon, and Hawkeye even in that prison anyway? Just stick them in ADX Florence and be done with it, they're nobodies without their various bits of equipment.
- The Sharon Carter/Cap romance was creepy and forced. Though I'll let is slide mostly because at least they got a funny reaction-shot joke from Bucky and Falcon. But I disagree with the Russo's that romance needs to be a part of Cap's story - and if it does, maybe not the niece of the old woman he spent the entire war pining for, and who he was visiting while she slowly lost her mind?
- Black Widow switching sides was daft. Her whole reason being "you're not gonna stop, are you? okay I guess I'll just let you go. you're pretty determined so I guess Tony and I were wrong this whole time".
- I enjoyed Rhodey in this film, but after the tension of "is he going to die", having it pulled away at the end with him walking around again was a weak way to close that out, and just a reminder that nothing is ever really at stake here.
- Ross flip-flopping around on whether or not to help Tony towards the end of the film was a weak attempt to inject conflict that they just ignored and only revisited for humour as the film ended.
In summation! The story was weakly conceived and vastly overstuffed with irrelevants. The sheer number of minor issues in it also just continually mounts until you're left wondering if anyone gave any serious thought to this film at all. It just feels a little sloppy, to be honest.
Though this is only my... three or four days critique. I might further hone it soon.
