DE GAULLE DOES NOT SPEAK FOR FRANCE
In a public statement issued today, leader of the French Section of the Worker's International (SFIO) party Guy Mollet condemned President de Gaulle and the French right wing for their actions in Algeria. "De Gaulle does not speak for France," the leader of the opposition declared, "most people in France do not possess de Gaulle and the right's atavistic and terribly immoral views. De Gaulle has made France the villain of the world, an enemy to the republic's own self-professed ideals of liberty, equality and brotherhood." Mollet promises that if his party were in power he would provide a referendum on Algerian self-determination. This comes as President de Gaulle's international ratings plummet in the face of his hardline against Algerian independence. De Gaulle's growing unpopularity has reignited calls from the left for the president to resign.
I'M GOING NOWHERE
Despite mounting pressure to resign, President de Gaulle insists he will not step down. "We will ramp up our presence in Algeria and drive these rebels out!" the President triumphanty declared. Although the President insists he will not deploy more troops to the region, top military officials have leaked that the French forces are present not as a peacekeeping force but to keep seperatist sentiments at bay. It is rumoured that French troops in Algeria have authorisation to engage with seperatist groups and armed fighters. "The outcry from the international community is a slap in the face," President de Gaulle continued in his address to the media, "The French Republic, which so gloriously fought against fascism twenty years before is now painted with the same brush as Hitler's Germany. We are simply a government looking out for their people, and recognition of this terrorist group as the legitimate representation of the Algerian people? It is a mockey! I urge the international community to recognize Algeria as an integral part of France." When asked of his opinions on Guy Mollet's statement, President de Gaulle simply scoffed and responded, "even for a Frenchman, that Guy is a cock!" Some commentators on the left are convinced President de Gaulle has lost his mind.

President Gursel and the Turkish government stand by and support Patrice Lumumba as the true successor of the Belgian Congo, and his stance against Belgium's horrific actions in the Congo.

The French Republic votes yes to the Congolese resolution. "We don't like Belgians." Will you also vote yes to the, rather anti-Belgian, UNSC resolution?

The answer to that is a resoundingly French "non." France has national pride on the line.

How on earth do you have national pride on the line? The UNSC resolution is exactly the same thing as the UNGA resolution you just supported, only that France actually gets to exert an amount of influence on the matter.

The Republic of China has chosen to support the Security Council proposal, while choosing to oppose for the General Assembly proposal, as supporting it would be detrimental to national security.

((The UNSC resolution is almost passed, but we're waiting on the UK player. If anyone's seen istanbul, please bug him about this. He also didn't send a turn, so if he's not playing any more I'll need someone to replace him, so if anyone knows someone wanting to play be sure to mention it.
If he hasn't commented by the end of today, I'll consider the UK as having abstained on the UNSC resolution.
We'll be doing UNGA votes with just player countries, since modelling the 100 or so UN members and how each would vote is slightly excessive, so people proposing General Assembly resolutions should keep an eye on the voting tally. You can also abstain if you don't support a measure but would see a no vote as too stern/detrimental to your policies/bilateral relations/etc))

The Republic of Congo(Stanleyville) votes Yes on the original proposal by the UAR. As victims of colonial, and now neocolonial oppression, we understand all too well the need for the voices of the 'Global South' to be heard, and reject the pedantic arguments by which privileged nations would deny a proportional voice to the people of nations which they have drawn and redrawn the borders of in the course of their exploitation.

Halie Selassie's Tour of AfricaToday, Emperor Halie Selassie has announced his intent to tour around Africa. This is coming not even a year after an attempted coup d'état while the Emperor was visiting Brazil. The tour is to go on to fall of this year.
Emperor Halie Selassie has not announced which countries he intends to visit. It's almost definite that he'll visit Congo-Stanleyville of whom he recognizes as the true government of the former Belgian Congo, and Ghana of whom he offered his hand in African unity. Other possible visits include: UAR, Mali, Senegal, Nigeria, Morocco, Somalia, Kenya, Rhodesia, and possibly Algeria and South Africa

People's Republic of China中华人民共和国
Year's End Report
Recognition of the Socialist Republic of Laos As the year comes to a close, the People's Republic of China is pleased to extend official recognition to the Socialist Republic of Laos government in Vientiane as the rightful government of the people and nation of Laos. The PRC is proud to see that the forces representing the will of the people have prevailed, and offers immediate aid to the new government to better assert themselves over any rebellions and banish the last vestiges of colonialism from their borders. The Chinese delegation to Laos will also extend offers to building a new embassy for China in Vientiane to better conduct missions between the two nations. In standing with Laos, China hopes that its fellow socialist and communist nations will follow suit to welcome Laos into the greatest brotherhood of Mankind that has ever existed.
Condemnation of Violence in the United States of America While the people's favor is winning in Laos and elsewhere, China would like to condemn the fact that the United States government, despite its supposed upholding of freedom for all peoples, seems to only care about the freedom of whites in its nation. While the United States fights wars supposedly for freedom across the world, its own citizens are attacked by organizations like the Klu Klux Klan that exist only to spread terror and force unwanted peoples in their places, particularly American blacks. The People's Republic of China thus forwards an official condemnation of the violence that seems to have swept across the nation.
China Offers Its Full Resources to the People's Republic of Albania Ongoing tensions between the People's Republic of Albania and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics has undoubtedly left many Albanians fearful of being cut off from the outside world and losing what prosperity they currently enjoyed. Thus, the People's Republic of China would like to officially make a pledge to, in exchange for the Sino-Albanian alliance already in place, ensure that Albania will not want for trade or resources or be forced to go without. Albania is an important ally of China, no matter what distances separate the two nations, and Albania is always welcome to take advantage of its alliance with China.
Investment in China's Industry Grows Foreign and domestic investors in China will be happy to note that, as 1961 ends, the People's Republic of China will invest an increasing amount of resources into its industries, particularly those along the coast and Pearl River Delta. While the industry continues to grow at its own pace, further investment by the government will provide greater chances for new businesses and factories to be created. China was long a center of world manufacturing and can be so again. As American manufacturing cities are wracked with riots and violence, the new industries with updated machines, tools, and skilled workers will only continue to grow in China. Trade with British Hong Kong and Japan have been increased over the past few years and can only grow. China is not to be a nation of farmers for any longer as the nation's Great Leap Forward, the most ambitious industrial program in human history, continues to take root.
