Update: 11 Police officers shot, 5 confirmed dead. 1 bystander shot, but expected to recover. 1 suspect in custody, 1 dead, unknown if there are other suspects. One suspect mentioned bombs planted all over the garage they were in and all over downtown - police will continue to search until they are sure there are no bombs, and are advising people to avoid downtown Dallas.
This is awful. The loved ones of those killed and injured have my condolences, and I dearly hope that no one else is hurt and the bomb threat turns out to be false.

Update from DMN: 12 Officers shot (8 DPD, 4 DART), of which 5 have died (4 DPD, 1 DART (Brent Thompson, 45, only DART officer killed in line of duty.)) 2 civilians also shot. DPD chief says officers were shot "ambush-style", some in back. Police exchanged gunfire with a suspect for 45 minutes in a parking garage. Said suspect said he acted alone and wanted to target law enforcement. Suspect was later killed by a bomb delivered to him by a DPD bomb squad robot. (It is unstated if the suspect or the police made the bomb.) A woman in the area was arrested, as were two other suspects. There was one other alleged suspect involved in a DPD shootout who was arrested. DPD also reports one or two other suspects arrested. Three other people were taken into custody and released. One was a BLM activist, openly carrying his gun at the protest. (When informed that he was a suspect, he immediately safed his gun, removed his shirt and turned himself, his shirt and his gun in. He was not allowed to speak with his lawyers for a time, but was released this morning.) Two others were a man picking his brother up at a bus station. (The brother threw a camouflage bag into his car and they both sped off. It was unrelated.) Downtown bus and rail service has been suspended. El Centro College is closed. Several downtown buildings are closed. A former military member said the shooters were strategic, and also heard police responding with an AR-15. beta.dallasnews.com/news/news/2016/07/07/hundreds-expected-downtown-dallas-rally-following-shooting-deaths-alton-sterling-philando-castile?_ga=1.43578597.1735951894.1467984081This was not the only attack on Dallas PD in recent times. One person attacked Dallas PD's HQ last year, but for different motives. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015_attack_on_Dallas_policeThis is the deadliest attack on police in the USA since 9/11 and tied for the fifth or seventh deadliest attack since 1900. www.nbcnews.com/storyline/dallas-police-ambush/deadliest-u-s-attacks-law-enforcement-1900-n605716
