A military group in Turkey appears to have begun an attempted coup. Military personnel have closed bridges in Istanbul and are occupying Ataturk airport in Ankara. Military aircraft have been seen flying low over the capital, and there have been reports of shooting and explosions in the capital. BBC News article hereLive Reddit news feed here

Arguably for the best, Erdogan wasn't exactly the best leader for Turkey.
I remember having a Turkish teacher in High school, and she said that although Turkey has had a lot of military coups, they've always seemed, to some extent, for the best. Hopefully this will be the case here too.

Funny thing this is happening since in a small map I made, Turkey collapses in a three way civil war between the NATO backed West, the Russian and Chinese backed East and a middleman of sorts propped up by ISIS. I hope this doesn't come to fruition in real life, given that Turkey has become a wildcard of sorts in the geo-political scene.

State broadcaster is off the air. Restrictions on various internet outlets. Some people say Erdogan is "safe". Official statement says a "peace council" is running things, and will respect Turks regardless of race, religion or language. They plan an new constitution, and plan to uphold democracy and the secular rule of law. Guardian Liveblog: www.theguardian.com/world/live/2016/jul/15/turkey-coup-attempt-military-gunfire-ankaraI did have a TL with an uprising or two in Turkey. Of course, it would have some foreign backers, a lot of popular support, and public TV and radio would play the Turkish national anthem, followed up by a semi-official anthem for the Gezi Park protesters- LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem". Here's hoping this helps the fight against IS and brings peace to the region. Update: Erdogan is calling on people to take to the streets to support him. I'm hoping people take to the streets to support the Peace Council- with "Party Rock Anthem" ringing out.

Orville mentioned it, now it's mandatory. Rise of the Anthem of Party Rock
I swear, if Turkey doesn't rename itself the Republic of Party Rock, I'm going to be very disappointed.
edit: More disappointing, a new party in Turkey not being called the Rock Party, with this being the Anthem of the Rock Party

Well, I now have a new song for an anthem. It was alleged that there was a secularist coup plan in the works for a while, named "Sledgehammer." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sledgehammer_(coup_plan)Now I cannot get Peter Gabriel out of my head. Tanks are reported to be firing near Parliament. Erdogan is reported to be seeking asylum in Germany, per a military source speaking to NBC news. Oh, and guess who just happens to be in Turkey? Only the infamous propagandist Elliot "Brown Moses" Higgins.

Orville, I'd love to reply to this but apparently Althistoria has stopped working I wonder how long it'd take for a German to pummel Erdogan to mush if he goes to Germany. Germans absolutely hate him.

Reports are that the coup forces have fired on the intel building and it's ablaze. (I'd personally have tried to capture it- it might be useful, especially if it can be documented that intel worked with AQ/IS/AN/FSA.)
Trump's comment:
Uh, I don't think the military backs you (Most of the military's contributions were for SANDERS), and I don't think the US Government is as undemocratic or supportive of Islamists as Turkey (Even with the DIA report- which deserves heavy coverage).
In other news, the Vice President of the EU Commission (and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and security Policy) is backing...ERDOGAN?
The EU is worse than I thought! If I were Greece, I'd Grexit ASAP!
And it gets worse...
If only he had done the same for Yanukovich or Zelaya. Health to the Peace Council...and I'd advise you to take back your views on the EU and NATO.

While I'm not familiar with Turkish politics and whatnot, I'm willing to bet that some of the guys who came up with that must have been underground the whole time and are now getting into action. Trump's comment: Uh, I don't think the military backs you (Most of the military's contributions were for SANDERS), and I don't think the US Government is as undemocratic or supportive of Islamists as Turkey (Even with the DIA report- which deserves heavy coverage). Typical of Trump to shill himself in just about any situation, per the norm.

Well, Erdogan appears to be exiting a vehicle at the Ataturk Airport (soon to be renamed?). Crowds are greeting him (Likely not the Chapullers). Official media are saying the coup failed.
So, in short, the bad guys won. Haven't been this disappointed since Yanukovich fled.

Erdogan has accused Fethullah Gulen, a leader of the opposition in Turkey who had fled to the US, sa being the instigator. Funny thing is the Gulen guy condemned the coup in response.
And yeah I'm pretty baffled as too why the Turkish people would defend an increasingly authoritarian jerk like Erdogan.

Erdogan has accused Fethullah Gulen, a leader of the opposition in Turkey who had fled to the US, sa being the instigator. The US has stated they would look into it, but is requesting evidence. (At least they are not knee-jerkedly targeting him.) www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/turkey-coup-fethullah-gulen-erdogan-extradition-us-barack-obama-john-kerry-return-cleric-blamed-a7140786.htmlTurkish forces have shut down airspace above Incrlik, as well as cutting power to it. Some say it's revenge on coup plotters, some say it's putting pressure on the USA. (Either way, if it lasts, the US's operations against IS would be hurt.) www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jul/16/isis-airstrike-turkey-airspace-us-air-forceA Turkish major, two captains, and several privates fled Turkey in a helicopter and made an emergency landing in Greece. Greece arrested them for entering the country illegally. Turkey is demanding them and the helicopter back. Greece has promised to return the helicopter, but is willing to consider granting the men asylum. Some of the protesters and others were lynching soldiers. www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2016/07/16/fail-coup-lays-bare-turkeys-deep-political-divisions/87186428/The most shocking, upsetting and inaccurate statement on the coup (with the possible exception of Katy Perry- I do not know if her statement was made prior to the coup or not) was from John Kerry. He stated, today, I believe, www.state.gov/secretary/remarks/2016/07/260139.htmI wonder if he's heard of Manuel Zelaya or Victor Yanukovich.

And now Turkey is trying to push for a return of the death penalty. Hundreds of judges have been removed from positions. At least US forces are back to targeting IS.
