Had colonialism continued up to the present-day in North Africa (specifically, with France keeping Algeria and perhaps Tunisia as well and Italy keeping Libya up to the present-day), would North Africans today have been more progressive?
For instance, would Algerians, Libyans, and Tunisians have been more progressive on things such as women's rights and especially gay rights if they would have remained a part of France/Italy and been given French/Italian citizenship en masse? Or would their attitudes towards these things have remained largely unchanged from our TL--with the result being that it would be harder to implement things such as same-sex marriage in France and Italy in this TL (since it is very likely that France and Italy would have to give citizenship and thus voting rights to North Africans en masse if they want to maintain control of these territories up to the present-day)?
Any thoughts on this?

Note: I am not endorsing continued colonialism in North Africa. Rather, I am simply asking a hypothetical question here about the attitudes of North Africans on things such as women's rights and gay rights had they remained under Europe rule up to the present-day.
