While it may seem unlikely for now but given the fact that Thailand is now under a military junta and that Malaysia is alledged to have connections to the Patani separatist organizations, it might be possible in the years to come.
I'm thinking about this for my upcoming comic, "Peach Kid", since I find the premise of my previous scenario where West Papua gains independence and Indonesia tries to reannex the area alittle unrealistic. With how Thai-Malay relations are turning out, I think this might sound more plausible to me considering the fact that Peach Kid needs to rely on realism without being boring (did I also mention that it's an action one?).
While I'm still working out the kinks but basically in the year 2018, the Thai king is assassinated along with most of the royal family by presumably Patani seperatists, thus leading the way for the Junta to dissolve the kingdom and install the State of Thailand with an increased emphasis on authoritarianism. Thus this leads to Thailand alienating it's former allies including the United States and turning towards China in place of them (Vietnam would ironically become an unofficial ally of the US in the mainland Southeast Asian region). Then in the year 2022 A.D., a terrorist attack on a Thai Naval base near Malaysia that killed off an important government official was carried bout by Islamic terrorists allegedly backed by sympathetic Malaysian military personnel convinces Bangkok that Malaysia is housing Islamic terrorists and is in cahoots with ISIS. Malaysia denies any involvement with the attacks but Thailand cuts off all diplomatic relations and mobilizes for war in the belief of suppressing Islamic fundie activities. The war begins with an invasion of the Western half of Malaysia supported by air strikes on the Eastern half. In response to the invasion, the USA and it's allies back Malaysia with weapons and supplies and China and Russia do the same with Thailand; that and Thailand is officially booted off the ASEAN.
But I don't know, maybe I might be missing some details here for this scenario but I like to know how you guys think about this possibility?
