With the 2016 Summer Olympics just over a week away from it's opening ceremony, I think it's time to preemptively create a thread for this. We can only wait and see if Brazil somehow manages to pull this off, or if it's going to be the worst games in their 120 year history.
I certainly will bet that this will be the most negatively received games, at least in while, with a combination of current Brazilian Politics, Rio de Janeiro being a complete mess, if what I last heard is still true, Zika virus still being a thing, Russia being suspended for this round due to the immense amount of doping the Russian teams were using (although individuals Russians are welcomed, although likely under the Independents rather than representing Russia), Serbia is going to pissed with that fact Kosovo is one of the three new teams introduced this round, and about half of the rest of Europe is going be pissed at another one of the new teams: The Refugees.
Oh yes, Refugees are getting their own team this time. As they are unable to compete for their original home, aren't able to compete for their adopted home, and probably don't want to compete under the Independents, the IOC created the Refugee Olympic Athletes so to show solidarity with all that had to flee their own homes. There are 10 competing athletes for the ROA, 5 from South Sudan (the last of the teams being introduced) who fled to Kenya, 2 from DR Congo who fled to Brazil, 2 from Syria who fled to Belgium and Germany, and 1 from Ethiopia who fled to Luxembourg. I'm sure this inclusion is going to get the Euros really upset. I think I'm going to personal going to call the ROA the "Athletes without homes/ Athlètes sans foyet," AWH or ASF.
