Augustin de Iturbide is not such a pompous fellow and is fine staying a commanding general of Imperial Mexico's armed forces. the Constituent Assembly chooses Infante Francisco de Paula of Spain. Interested in artistic pursuits, Francisco was an amateur singer and painter and seen as being easily controlled by the Assembly die to his lack of interest in politics.
The young Empire's first challenge is when it claims all of the former territories of Viceroyalty of New Spain, though this was made much easier by the French invasion of Spain in 1893 to upend the Liberal Triennium and restore Ferdinand VII. The Cadiz Cortes and even Ferdiand afterwards had little resources to actually. The next challenge is when Anglo settlers in Tejas, annoyed by the abolition of legal slavery in 1829, try to seek their independence. Senior General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna is appointed by Emperor Francisco via Prime Minister José Justo Corro to take control of the territory which he does by roundly defeating the rebels at the battles of Gonzales, Alamo, and Velasco where Stephen Austin and Samuel Houston are captured. Austin dies in prison in Veracruz and Houston is eventually hanged for treason.
The Mexican-American War in 1898 is eventually fought as the Empire struggles for economic dominance withe the United States in which it loses Cuba, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico, but retains Trinidad and Tobago, Santo Domingo and Guadeloupe. Historians speculate that if the Empire had not been also embroiled in competition with the Dutch for Indonesia while attempting to expand the Mexican Philippines they might have been able to produce a much more satisfactory conclusion to the war with the USA.
