How can it possible to have the Détente period of the cold war last longer than it had OTL?

Well, it looks like the Détente period ended with the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan, so avoiding that seems to be the best way to keep it going. This could tie in with your speculation about Kosygin in that other thread - if he comes to power Soviet intervention in Afghanistan would be unlikely, and the Détente would continue. Since the war in Afghanistan is thought to have contributed to the USSR's fall, it's possible the USSR could keep going until the turn of the century, and possibly beyond depending on the circumstances!

Perhaps eliminate Zbignew Brzezinski from power. He favored drawing the Soviets into Afghanistan- even before the Afghan war!

I'm with you on this as it can be the best chance to keep Détente going longer than it had IOTL. Perhaps eliminate Zbignew Brzezinski from power. He favored drawing the Soviets into Afghanistan- even before the Afghan war! Maybe but then again the US has to do something about the Reds moving in on Afghanistan IOTL; would be considered appeasement if the US didn't do anything to help the Afghan guerillas.

Someone other than Reagan as POTUS during the 80s would help. Reagan ratcheted things up to a new round of Cold War. Most others were fine with detente and would have kept it.

I think the best way to avoid having him in office would be having the USSR not getting involved in Afghanistan and the best way to do that is by having a different leader in charge of the USSR that wants to keep Détente going (i.e. Kosygin).
