Playing The Phantom Pain facing against former South African Army turned mercenaries got me thinking about the Apartheid era. It's no surprise that it's definitely not a good time in South Africa's history but yet I wonder if it could have been possible to avert the coming of Apartheid or is it not possible?

Any takers? I'm surprised this isn't getting a lot of attention given how deep the subject is in terms of historical impact.

The 1948 election seems to have been the turning point.

As was pointed out, you need Jan Smuts to win in 1948. Some form of discrimination continuing for a long time was inevitable, but what we saw in OTL was definitely a product of circumstance. Ironically enough, IIRC Smuts planned or was likely to bring in large numbers of Europeans as immigrants. This could've given the White population of SA either a plurality or maybe even a majority, and elevated up economically by a fair degree.
