As I'm still working on Project Lizard, I'm contemplating the idea of having WWIII taking place in the late 90's rather than the early 2000's since I figure it would make WWIV more of a "surprise" in the 21st century, I'm considering how would WWIII effect pop culture.
Right off the bat, a lot of celebrities would be drafted into the ranks of their respective powers and that a lot of media would be effected, and yet they might not be so "jingoistic" as they were in WWII (especially on the NATO side) and that there might be less talk of war bonds and more of making the world safe for whatever power fights for.
So any ideas perhaps?

Well, the first thing that pops in my head is Schwarzenegger, Stallone, or any of those big action stars making some sort of propaganda commercial asking for people to join the army

Speaking of cause, I can imagine the other side (the "not so communistic Soviet" side) running with the idea that NATO are "evil capitalist fascists" and hellbent on conquering the Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics/whatever for corporate colonization; que the comparisons between NATO and the Nazis.

Essentially, yes, except instead of them being mercenaries, they'd, of course, be part of the miltary

MC Ren on N.W.A originally planned on joining the Marines or Army back in the 1980s before seeing Full Metal Jacket and having his music career take off. So with that in mind, seeing several West Coast rappers in the service would be rather interesting.

Is this nuclear? Might affect whether there is a pop culture at all. I just finished a canticle for leibowitz.

No, because where's the fun in having both sides nuke each other to "oblivion", though I could have the nuking business play out like in Able Archer 83 but still it'd be more fun in not having nukes. Though I will say that nukes by the time WWIII comes are mostly reduced through the successful SALT treaties in the late 20th century so that there are only some in the double digits and that they are to be used as a "last resort" in wartime.
And what's with this "canticle for leibowitz"? Is it some Big Lebowski reference or something?

And what's with this "canticle for leibowitz"? Is it some Big Lebowski reference or something? Oh lord no, it's one of the most popular post-apocalyptic novels ever written. Here's a link.

Long story short: nuclear war happens in the sixties. Mobs of looters kill all scientists and leaders. Mutants happen. Catholics in Utah desert Abbey (what about the Mormons?) preserve books. New dark age happens. Later renaissance with midwestern cities like Texarkana and Denver and Laredo scheming against one another about a horde of plains nomad native Americans and reinventing electrical generators until everyone is ready to have another nuclear war. I think any world war would have at least a few nukes fly.

Speaking of which there probably won't be much post-apocalyptic settings in post war media once the conflict given that the war I envisioned does not go nuclear at all; though I can't say the same for WWIV, that's when crazy s--t happens but relax the world doesn't get magically destroyed or that "dere iz no furver historikol rekird uv wut happenz next" garbage.

You know, I wonder how would a Third World War affect the holidays? I could imagine Halloween taking a hit since all that gory bloody stuff might be seen as in bad taste (I'm not really a fan of that stuff but that's not the point).
