There was some discussion about Avatar in the shoutbox, so I thought I'd start a thread for it. One of the things we were discussing was the quality of Legend of Korra. I think we can all agree that parts of it are rather bad, but do you all think that it's bad as a whole, or do the third and fourth season redeem it in your eyes? I'm firmly in the latter category myself - season 2 was a chore to watch, but seasons 3 and 4 were spectacular, easily on par with the best of TLA in my mind. What do you guys think?

While in my opinion it still doesn't hold a candle to the original, it still is all in all a good show. The first season was good, if it was a stand alone show (which it was originally intended to be). The second season is, indeed, a chore to watch (although over all I didn't mind that much), but getting to see the backstory of essentially the entire universe in only 2 episodes was a great watch. Season 3 was better, although I don't think I like it as much as others. Season 4 I really love, I love Kuvira and I love Nazi Earth Kingdom.
The one thing I really couldn't stand from this show was the mechs. I absolutely despise mechs, probably more that Kubo Caskett hates Nuclear WWIII, and I hope mechs more-or-less disappear from animation. I started do a, well, fanfic I guess most would call it, about the next Avatar, and by his time those mechs are f*cking banned as weapons of mass destruction

One thing I don't see mentioned very often but think should be is the quality of music in the franchise. It's just...amazing.

I honestly didn't find the music fantastic (I don't think really any show has great music beyond it's theme song). There's two exceptions to this though: The ending theme/ the song they play at the Sun Peoples episode, and the final climax between Aang and Firelord Ozai. That moment where Firelord Ozai first sees Aang, rips off his shirt, and flies towards Aang with that string orchestra going DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN and you just see the airship crash and burn... That was the best 10 seconds in any show ever

The later ones that were essentially powered armour were alright, but the early "mecha tanks" looked awful. One thing I don't see mentioned very often but think should be is the quality of music in the franchise. It's just...amazing. Oh my god, yes! TLA had one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. Every song in it is great but I have a particular fondness for Blue Spirit - it's a great piece of atmospheric music, and I loved the character/that subplot in Season 1:

Maybe I like the soundtrack more than I remember... I should rewatch the show again (just add that on to my list of stuff I need to watch)

MNN, I heartily recommend rewatching the show, or even just re-listening to the soundtrack. It's better than you think it is. LOK has some pretty great ones too.
I still rate TLA much higher than LOK, but Books 3 and 4 were some of the best in the whole Avatar series. Book 2 was trash though. I have my own headcanon of how things should've turned out somewhere, but long story short, a Dark Avatar is a dumb idea. I also dislike the whole idea of the Avatar being a spirit of light too, actually. Their old idea of the Avatar spirit being a kind of World Spirit is a much better one. When they did Raava and Vaatu it felt too much like trying to combine Eastern philosophy (Yin and Yang) with Western philosophy ("good and evil"), and ended up with a kinda broken mishmash.
Also I have the unpopular opinion that even the supposed-saving-grace of Book 2, the origin episodes, are not that great. Though they're the best of a bad bunch, they could've been so much better. The animation style was great, but the whole world as they animated it felt kinda empty and un-dynamic. Plus I'm less than a huge fan of the power of bending being granted by the Lion Turtles in quite the way it was, but that's a minor hmph.

I wasn't a big fan of any of those elements either, but the origin episodes were bearable, which is more than you can say for the rest of that season. Plus none of it really came up again in seasons 3 and 4, so it's safely ignored.
