Has anyone here seen the recent movie Free State of Jones? I saw it with my father last week and I was absolutely blown away.
It's a disturbing film, a brutal and uncompromising film about an ugly period in American history. It will make people uncomfortable, but I feel that is for the best; we don't have enough movies about the Civil War and Reconstruction period.
The tension in this movie is amazing, and the photography is used quite well. It uses silence to great effect, and the battle scenes are intense.

I hadn't heard of it (or the historical events it portrays) before, but it sounds quite interesting. I'm not sure either of the cinemas near me are showing it, though.

I'm not even sure interest is present outside of the state you live in, because here in Minnesota, I haven't heard of it nor has my film buff friend talked about it.

I live in a different state than SpanishSpy and according to Google it is in local theaters. I suppose it has more interest in states that had battles fought in their soil during the Civil War. And, I haven't heard of it until now, too. Reading the promo on the movie, seems interesting.

I live in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, and the film is set in Mississippi. I'd imagine most of the interest is in the former Confederacy.

I would like to see it, and certainly wish to read the book. I'm also certain it should blow the local neoConfederates' minds- and some of the Primitve Baptists who see it or hear of it. (Nowadays, the PB's tend to be right-wing, like Guy Hunt and similar. Back in the 1860's they were Unionist, and Newton Knight was one of them.)

That's one of the things I thought after seeing the movie: this movie is a perfect antidote to Lost-Causerism.
