While some may recall the incident where the candidate for the next leader of the Soviet Union, Peter Masherov (despite me not finding much info on him), got in a car accident that killed him in 1980; I wonder if the same could happen to Deng Xiaoping during his historic visit in the US in 1979?
Keep in mind at the time China was gearing up for a war with Vietnam and just happened after he got back in early February; anyway, would his early death butterfly the war and/or his reforms (which may or may not be carried out by his successors)?

How would he have gotten into the accident without possibly there being an international incident? Driving on his own?
