What if FDR listens to a doctor, who tells he won't live through another term as president and he does not run in 1944. Who wins the Democratic nomination? I think Roosevelt's endorsement would be very important. Who would he pick? I think the Democrat would win. He would be helped by Roosevelt's popularity and the idea of continueing the successful wartime polices. That is unless Roosevelt picks William O Douglas. I don't think a man who as a 67 year old Supreme Court Justice married a 23 year old college senior would have had good political skills. I don't see why Dewey wouldn't still be the Republican candidate.

Roosevelt probably wouldn't be remembered quite as fondly, as dying in office really did secure his position as a Martyr. Who ever replaces him (I wouldn't doubt that Truman gets in) probably wouldn't be able to wield the legacy of FDR in the same way he could in OTL, even after his death a couple months later.
