What if Ronald Reagan won the Republican nomination in 1976? OTL he named moderate to liberal Republican Senator Richard Schweiker as his running mate before the convention and alienated enough of his supporters to narrowly lose the nomination. The POD is that rumors of Reagan's selection of Schweiker emerge before he makes the announcement. When he and his staff hear the negative comments from conservatives, they decide to keep the selection of Schweiker until after he has won the nomination. Reagan is selected at the convention and the next morning he announces Schweiker as his choice. Schweiker is nominated with many angry no votes. The selection of Schweiker does not make peace with all Ford supportes. While Reagan can not be tied to Nixon as easily as Ford could, Carter can use the bad economy and Reagan's unpopular views like his opposition to Medicare.
