One wonders if foreign nations, such as Japan, the PRC, or Russia might give the Marianas some support. Also, one wonders how the Hawai'ian independence activists will respond to this.

They might be tempted to but Russia or China especially could be explosive as it could enable the regime loyalists to paint the rebellion as some sort of communist/hard left/anti-American coup attempt.

UNITED REPUBLIC OF THE MARIANAS DECLARED Reuters, June 9, 2008 After a week of negotiations, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands have united into a single independent republic. The constitution of the United Republic establishes the nation as a semi-presidential system. Robert Underwood and Benigno Fital have been selected as President and Prime Minister pending elections. The United States continues to refuse the independence of the Marianas, though it has stopped short of using military force. So i wonder which nation would like to recognize this new country, i have a feeling they are in the same boat as Taiwan.

COULTER: I have some good news and some bad news. LOTT: Give it to me. COULTER: The good news is that Santorum's come out of his coma, and his mental faculties appear to be intact. The bad news is that he's paralyzed in both legs and his left arm, and he has some difficulties with speech. LOTT: Guess I'll have to be Acting President a little bit longer. Should we tell him about the mess in the Marianas? COULTER: Nah, we don't need to put additional stress on him while he's recovering. LOTT: Good, Santorum would probably order a full invasion. The last thing we need right now is another military commitment. COULTER: What are you planning? LOTT: I suggest we impose a blockade on the Marianas. We'll see how defiant they are when their children are starving.

I wonder if Santorum will consider that an objective decision or an attempt by Lott to maintain his current position. Could there be some internal power struggle?
Also wonder about a blockade. That's still going to be a big military commitment and pictures of hungry children and old people on TV and the like aren't going to go down well. Possibly especially with the USN personnel doing the blockading.

So, Frothy survived the late former Lt. Calley's assassination attempt, only to be permanently crippled... that's an even crueler fate than being killed outright - but I suspect a lot of Americans are going to believe he had it coming after everything he's done to the country... It's a good thing Lott has decided to keep the news of the secession of Guam and the Marianas from Frothy for now - he'd probably have a raving fit followed by a fatal stroke, and then Lott would end up becoming president for real...
As for Lott's plan to impose a blockade on the Marianas, I suspect this is not going to over well with a lot of the American people, as they're already ticked off over everything else that's occurred under Frothy's regime, and it may end up turning into a fiasco for the whole country if the Marianas' people begin starving - the US's allies are going to condemn it, as well as their enemies, if only just to sink a knife into the side of the nation which has has been condemning them for committing the exact same type of bad actions ever since the Cold War!

US IMPOSES BLOCKADE ON THE MARIANAS
Reuters June 13, 2008
The United States government has imposed a blockade on the Mariana Islands in response to the territory's declaration of independence.
In a White House press conference, Acting President Lott said "If the leaders of this rebellion truly care about their people, they will give themselves up and spare the people of the islands from unnecessary death and suffering."
The announcement of the blockade has drawn widespread international condemnation, with protestors gathering outside US embassies around the world in support of the Marianas.
Robert Underwood, acting president of the Marianas, responded to Lott's comments by saying "Those tin tyrants in Washington can go f**k themselves".

As I expected, the US's blockade of the Mariana Islands is drawing heavy condemnation from their allies, etc. I'm just wondering how long they can hold out - perhaps we'll see blockade runners make an appearance? The longer the blockade goes on, the worse the US's standing in the world will be (it's already gotten pretty bad since Frothy became POTUS), which is going to lead to growing fury amongst much of the American people... Meanwhile, the US's adversaries / enemies may just try to take advantage of the situation to stir up trouble elsewhere...

The United States government has imposed a blockade on the Mariana Islands in response to the territory's declaration of independence. Wonder how large this Mariana Islands blockade is, doubt it will be as big as the one during the Cuban missile Crisis.

Oh yeah, now the Continental Army has thrown it's support behind the United Republic of the Marianas... This is not going to go over well with acting POTUS Lott & Co. The Continental Army has already committed one terrorist act against Frothy's regime - the attack on the Washington police department, which resulted in the deaths of 3 cops, and with Frothy currently incapacitated this statement might prompt Lott to order the government's law enforcement agencies to go after them, which given everything else that's happened is going to further inflame much of the American public. And should the authorities make a mistake or overreact in a situation that results in the deaths of people considered to be innocent by the public at large - say a botched raid on a CA safe house that ends up with a shootout and deaths on both sides, it will be gasoline thrown onto the fire, giving the Continental Army a big boost in membership and driving another nail into the Santorum regime's coffin!

See things are heating up. Missed posts for a little while as somehow got myself logged off so didn't get notice of updates when I checked in and only just noticed it. I wonder how the US military is responding to being used against American citizens in such a case? Also what's going to happen if some group sends humanitarian aid? Is the government going to turn back a ship carrying food and medicine?

Is the government going to turn back a ship carrying food and medicine? Methinks there's a going to be a lot of people in the US military who are not going to happy about being used against their own citizenry at all... and turning away ships carrying food and medicine to fellow Americans - despite their being secessionists with legitimate reasons for quitting the union - is probably going to be looked upon by many US military personnel as the type of act that foreign dictators commit against their own people... I dread what kind of very real firestorm is going to occur if the US Navy for some reason ends up firing upon and sinking one of those aid-carrying ships...

A lot of US military personnel were actually sympathetic to Marianas' fight for independence. When Washington imposed a blockade on the islands, many personnel went behind their superiors' backs to ensure that food and medicine got through to the people. This was made easier by the fact that aid-carrying ships were merely stopped and raided instead of sunk. USN Sailors were required to turn over all material confiscated from these ships, but many sailors kept some of what they took and furtively brought it to the islands. These sailors would later be recognized by the government of the Marianas for their actions.

Oh yeah, I suspected this might end up happening... Defying orders from Washington to blockade the Marianas in order to starve the secessionists into submission, sympathetic members of the USN are now secretly supplying them with portions of the very food and medicine they were were supposed to be confiscating... So in addition to all the other troubles Santorum regime has caused through it's despicable actions, we can now add a rift being formed within the US military, which will end up getting wider if things escalate...

It all depends on how things go. A split military could end up in civil war, which could be very nasty. Also a military that defies political control sets a dangerous precedent. However in this case its definitely justified morally.

However in this case its definitely justified morally. Indeed so... Once elements of the US military begin clandestinely defying both their superiors and the government to do what is morally right, that is a very real point of no return. As for a Second American Civil War happening, the longer the blockade of the Marianas continues and the more the URM's population suffers, the greater the spread of dissatisfaction throughout the US military is going to be, so if a very real split does occur I could conceivably see such a conflict erupting... I hope cooler heads prevail before that happens, but that's probably a longshot as long as the Santorum regime remains in power...

Suspect it's more likely to end up with some sort of effective coup, although that could be damaging enough, rather than a full scale civil war. At some point the leading members of the military are likely to decide that enough is enough and their not going to tolerate this going on any more. Which could just be a decision to no longer support the blockade or simply to no longer tolerate Santorum's government.
Technically the proper response of members of the military would be to refuse to obey such orders, offering their resignation although for the lower ranks this could be nasty but given how extreme the government has become I suspect many will see this as not a viable option and that more must be done.

SANTORUM MAKES FIRST PUBLIC APPEARANCE SINCE SHOOTING
The Daily Mail June 17, 2008
Against the advice of his doctors, President Santorum has made his first public appearance since his attempted assassination on May 27.
Sitting in a wheelchair in front of the St. Francis Hospital in front of several news cameras, Santorum thanked the American people for their "unwavering support" during his recovery and denounced the secessionist movement in the Marianas.
Many observers have noted Santorum's slurred and somewhat rambling speech, raising questions about his mental state. Some have suggested that Santorum has taken a blow to his mental capacity from the shooting and that Acting President Lott is using him as a figurehead.

That could be a key factor, showing him looking so feeble could prompt some of his supporters to desert him and start things really rolling towards the downfall of the regime.
