What if, for whatever reason, Hungary had a hyper-nationalistic government in the 1990s and would have thus decided to invade Romania in order to get Northern Transylvania back?
For what it's worth, I expect a Romanian victory in this war as well as a NATO military intervention (possibly limited to air strikes against Hungary, but still very significant nonetheless) to help Romania fight against Hungary. I certainly don't think that NATO would be willing to tolerate Hungarian aggression after the end of the Cold War even if Romania isn't a NATO member yet.
Also, I expect Romania to implement regime change in Hungary in this scenario after it kicks Hungary out of its territory. Think of a repeat of 1919, if you will.

How does Hungary get a far-right regime in the 1990s? A more likely scenario would be Romania electing Gheorghe Funar and having him antagonize the Hungarian minority inside Romania.

Best of all, this scenario happened in Zhirinovsky's Russian Empire.
