"MSNBC seems to have moved on to the "Depression" stage of Grief." Favorite quote so far edit: Republicans control the House. Since Clinton funneled funds to her campaign as opposed to the states, one did not expect that much for the Dems taking the House- though they DID gain at least four seats, and are leading at least one more (Ami Bera). Two won't be decided until Louisiana has their runoff in December. They nearly took down Darrell Issa (His race has not been declared, though all the regular votes are counted). John Mica is out in Florida for the Republicans. One of the seats that the Democrats lost was that of former Republican Patrick Murphy (The guy who had the DCCC going in on his side against Alan Grayson and Pam Keith). As for the Senate, the Democrats gained Illinois and may gain New Hampshire, as Maggie Hassan is leading. Louisiana has a runoff in December. Missouri and New Hampshire gained Republican governors, though North Carolina may go Democratic, depending on how provisional ballots go. And SC has its first gay state legislator, as Republican Jason Elliott beat a religious rightist's write-in campaign 84% to 14%- in the district that includes Bob Jones University. In other news, one of the Democrats who got in was none other than Charlie Crist. www.tampabay.com/news/politics/stateroundup/charlie-crist-wrests-longtime-gop-pinellas-seat-from-incumbent-david-jolly/2302040And Hillary had an interesting pick for the Supreme Court- a Texas Republican known for defending David Miscavige. tonyortega.org/2016/11/01/hillary-clinton-has-considered-david-miscaviges-appeals-lawyer-for-the-us-supreme-court/

Trump didn't win so much as Clinton threw. She failed to articulate a compelling reason to vote for her besides "First female President" and "I'm not Trump."
For the first reason, it's really not that special for there to be a female President in a world where we've had Gandhi, Thatcher, Merkel, etc. I agree that it's new and fresh to be a female American President, but Clinton cannot take advantage of that because she's the embodiment of the American political establishment.
For the second reason, sure, Trump is a boorish man. But I don't really see that as a disqualification from the Presidency, and I guess many other people didn't either.

Sadly, we've had other boors, such as Nixon, Clinton, and Bush II. Of course, Trump didn't have many coattails. Republicans have gained on state levels (mostly due to Democrats ignoring, though Clinton's siphoning money from state parties did not help), but Republicans lost seats in the House and Senate. Howard Dean is trying for DNC chair again. Sanders wants Keith Ellison in. Donna Brazile just got chided by a staffer at a meeting. The NC Governor's race is still undecided.

Yesterday, President Obama and President-Elect Trump had a meeting, and apparently the meeting went off pretty well with both complimenting each other. I don't exactly remember what Obama said of Trump, but Trump called Obama "a good man," this coming from someone who only 4 years ago believed Obama was illegally residing in the White House.
This meeting is rather encouraging for me, showing that Trump can, in-fact, get along with political opponents (although, an argument can be made that Obama isn't exactly a political opponent)

Seriously. www.bbc.com/news/election-us-2016-37953528OTOH, Mike Pence is now running the transition team, instead of Chris Christie. That's a big way for Neocons and Theocons to get into power. Meanwhile, Trump may not lock Clinton up after all. (Shame- though, in the interests of fairness, I hope he'd lock others up too, like the Bush administration people who launched Iraq- after all, Trump DID say they lied too.) ktla.com/2016/11/11/call-to-lock-her-up-puts-trump-in-a-bind-over-his-threat-to-prosecute-clinton/

I'd kind of think that the statue of limitations might of run out on that (although, I don't know what the statue of limitations says about this issue would be) Per one website, it's five years. (Of course, what I'd do in that situation would involve publicly releasing the evidence, to ruin their names in history books.) On the one hand Republicans can see the election as good for them- they kept the House and Senate, gained some governorships and legislatures, and Trump is in power. OTOH, Democrats gained two seats in the Senate and several in the House, won the popular vote, and many referenda went the Democrats' way. Trump is an interesting case. Many of his policies can only be described as reactionary. OTOH, he favors an increase in the minimum wage, promised tax credits for childcare, and in the past, he favored a wealth tax and even single-payer healthcare! I could see situations where he gets more Democratic votes for policies than Republican ones.

I mean Trump would lean on Pence and his cabinet, like Bush II did. He, I would assume would want to get his laws passed.

I have the feeling that Trump's cabinet may try and push Trump to the right on some issues, from LGBT issues to foreign policy (Guliani and Bolton? Why not Michael Scheuer or Walter Jones?) As for passing laws, Republicans may pass things Trump does not like, from NATO to restrictions on same-sex marriage. Just saw some big news- Trump may be considering Nikki Haley for SecState. She's likely more reasonable than Guliani and Bolton. (It's almost certain.) OTOH, that means Henry McMaster, the guy who broke the VRA to help Bush win over John McCain, would be our new Governor. www.mcclatchydc.com/news/nation-world/national/article115300958.html

I'm really starting to hate the people that say "If Sanders won the DNC nomination, he would have slaughtered Trump." No, one of my two main concerns with him getting the nomination was 1: his age (which apparently didn't matter that much considering everyone else is like 6 years younger than him) and 2: the fact he's a self-described Socialist in possibly the most anti-Socialist country in the world. It wouldn't be a slaughter, at least not one in favor of Sanders.

In addition, Bloomberg very likely would have ran, and who knows what that'd do.

It wouldn't be a slaughter, at least not one in favor of Sanders. Well it's very much unknown, but I'd be skeptical of Sanders' chances in the general also. In addition, Bloomberg very likely would have ran, and who knows what that'd do. Outside of Bloomberg's base in NYC and the Beltway, he wouldn't get too many votes, though the media would no doubt want to pull a McMullin on him. (Why is it the war backers are the only third party candidates to get serious coverage?) Lots of developments that I think deserve attention. First, the local one. (Feel free to repost this- and other things- on AH.com!) As you know, Trump is picking Nikki Haley for UN Ambassador. I'm of mixed feelings about that. First, the good stuff: Nikki Haley has some small foreign experience- mostly dealing with businesses abroad. Nikki Haley has matured quite a bit from her earlier time as governor (Having two major disasters and a domestic terror incident can do that to you). Nikki Haley is not a Trump backer and is not a fan of many of his policies. With the possible exceptions of Frank Keating or Mia Love, I can't think of a choice more likely to piss off the alt-Right. (Not only for her race, but also for her taking the Confederate Flag down.) Now the bad: Haley doesn't have as much experience as a diplomat. She came under fire for high expenses on one of her trips. Haley is not the fire-eater (to reborrow an old term) like, say, Pat McRory, but she is rather right-wing, and might vote against certain things at the UN. The thing that worries me the most is that Trump may be trying to kick Haley upstairs. The Lieutenant Governor is Henry McMaster, one of the first elected officials to back Trump. (And if you know me, you know I am still upset over his closing the polls for the 2000 SC Republican Presidential Primary.) He's also angling to run for governor in 2018. Then there is Trump's pic for education secretary. I'm not as familiar with the DeVos's as those from Michigan would be, but I do know that they are very right-wing, and opponents of public schools. (They also tend to be part of the Dominionist faction of the Religious Right.) She's also involved with the Acton Institute, which, not long ago, put out an article calling for a return of child labor. Finally the biggest news is that Jill Stein is pushing for an audit of votes in three swing states- and people are paying for it! This could lead to some interesting results- not only for this election. (Perhaps the people who fund this will be more willing to Back Jill Stein and the Greens in the future- after all, THEY are the ones fighting, while the establishment is doing nothing.)

I'm in Portland now and there have been alot of protests. California is talking about going independent with a Calexit vote. Good for them. Here's hoping for independent Cascadia/Ecotopia/California/Oregon. More news! Well, most of Trump's cabinet picks are as bad as I would expect, with a few exceptions on his foreign policy staff. The Democrats don't appear to have learned a thing, with Pelosi still remaining as speaker. I don't know if any Democrats are campaigning in Louisiana for the Senate race or the house race they can still win. (There is another House race, but Republicans captured the two top spots.) Clinton and her allies have joined in the crusade against "fake news". I don't think they mean fake news like PropOrNot. By the way, besides the Ukrainian fascists, another group quoted in that WaPo article was a right-wing think tank whose members promoted eugenics, called for a nuclear first strike on the USSR, were anti-colonialists, and blasted Doctor Strangelove(!). www.alternet.org/media/anonymous-blacklist-promoted-washington-post-has-shocking-roots-ukrainian-fascism-eugenics-and
